San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister will retire Aug. 2 after nearly 23 years of service, officials announced Friday.

McAllister, elected to six terms since 2002, has focused on customer service, expanded community outreach and the fiscal health of the county’s treasury. Under his leadership, the office achieved a 99% property tax collection rate and saw a significant increase in digital payments to make services more accessible to residents.

During his tenure, the county’s Investment Pool earned the highest credit rating while maximizing returns, safeguarding principal and ensuring liquidity for pool participants, including voluntary members. McAllister also managed the county’s banking relationships and supported transitions for departments handling billions of dollars in transactions.

He served as a member of the Board of Retirement for the San Diego County Employees Retirement Association, overseeing the adequacy of the retirement fund, which holds more than $19 billion in assets. McAllister also administered the county’s deferred compensation program, which includes about 13,000 active employees.

In addition to mentoring individuals from diverse backgrounds, McAllister led annual financial literacy symposiums for county staff and school district employees, covering topics such as cash handling and fraud prevention.

“Dan’s passion for public service and dedication to community are his legacy,” officials said. “We congratulate Dan McAllister on his well-deserved retirement and wish him all the best in this next chapter.”
