Is it Sweetwater Valley Little League or Sweep-water Valley after D42 trifecta?

by Phillip Brents

Is it Sweetwater Valley Little League or perhaps Sweep-water Valley Little League?

Keen observers might be asking that after the California District 42 circuit won four of the six Tournament of Champions titles and then proceeded to sweep this year’s 10U, 11U and 12U all-stars championships.

That’s seven championships out of the nine for a prodigious 0.778 hitting average.

That’s not all.

SVLL also advanced two of its additional all-star squads to this year’s Intermediate and Senior division championship games.

That’s nine teams in the district’s 12 postseason levels for a cool 0.750 on-base percentage.

The latest tally came over the weekend:

Sweetwater Valley edged Eastlake, 9-8, on Sunday to force a double-elimination game on Monday in the 10U division.

Sweetwater Valley doubled up Chula Vista American, 4-2, to win the 11U division championship outright.

Park View slipped past Sweetwater Valley, 7-6, on Sunday to force a double-elimination game on Monday in the 12U division.

In double-elimination games on Monday, Sweetwater Valley defeated Eastlake, 7-5, in seven innings to capture the 10U banner while Sweetwater Valley blanked View, 6-0, to claim the 12U championship.

It marked the second time in three years that SVLL teams have swept the 10U, 11U and 12U district titles.

“This amazing accomplishment is the result of the hard work and dedication of our players and coaches, along with the unwavering support of their families,” SVLL president Joe Griffin said. “It is also a reflection of the consistent effort and commitment of our dedicated SVLL board of directors and volunteers, who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure our league continues to grow, innovate, thrive and remain competitive with each new season.”

All is well in District 42. The district’s championship Intermediate, Junior and Senior division teams are now competing in the Southern California state tournament.

District 42 administrator Ernie Lucero called this year’s all-star tournament “by far the most exciting games we have seen over the years.”

“All of our parents from all of the nine leagues came out to show their support for our host league — Park View Little League,” Lucero added, “They witnessed these young players perform at a high level, making our district the most competitive in Southern California.”

Road to the championship
Sweetwater Valley took the long route to this year’s 10U district title. SVLL defeated Luckie Waller, 11-0, and Chula Vista American, 10-1, but dropped a x-x decision to a likewise 2-0 Eastlake team (16-0 over Southwest and 6-1 over Park View) in the winners bracket final. Eastlake advanced directly to the championship game while Sweetwater Valley needed a x-x win over xxx in the challenger bracket final to get a rematch.

SVLL reversed its fortunes with Sunday’s 9-8 win to faced Eastlake for the third time in Monday’s winner-take all rematch.

SVLL led 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning but had to play two more innings to pull off the championship game victory.

“After a tough loss to Eastlake earlier in the tournament, the 10U team showed incredible resilience, battling its way through the losers bracket and ultimately defeating Eastlake twice to bring home the banner,” Griffin noted.

In the double-elimination “if game” championship final, Luca Gonzalez gave SVLL a strong start on the mound, striking out three batters over three innings before Sebas Whitley slammed the door with 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing no hits and helping preserve the win.

With the game on the line, Judah Winnick came through clutch with a go-ahead double in extra innings, and Kaleb Pyle and Santi Villalva turned a game-ending double play to seal the victory and reward the team with the district title.

The 11U final was more straight forward from the CVLL vantage point.

As last year’s10U Southern California State Cchampion, this ear’s SVLL 11U team came out strong and went undefeated throughout the tournament to claim back-to-back District 42 championships.

In a hard-fought battle against Chula Vista American in the championship game, Mykah Mitchell delivered a dominant performance on the mound to help propel Sweetwater Valley to victory by allowing five hits while recording an impressive 11 strikeouts to put his team in a position to finish the job.

Offensively, Noah Winnick came through with a crucial double to give SVLL the lead, helping secure the eventual 4-2 victory.

“This team continues to show what can be accomplished through trust, teamwork and determination as a group of true teammates and fierce competitors,” Griffin said.

SVLL’s 12U team also had to fight through adversity to claim its championship banner.

A grand slam put Park View ahead 4-1 in Sunday’s 12U game, though SVLL managed to tie the game in the top of the third inning. The game was tied 4-4 through three innings and 6-6 going into the bottom of the fifth inning and 6-6 going into the top of the seventh inning. Park View won 7-6 with a walk-off hit to force Monday’s so-called if-game.

“Our 12U team came back strong to capture the District 42 title after a highly competitive extra-inning battle against Park View Little League the day before,” Griffin said.

Julian Sevilla led the team om Monday’s contest with a dominant performance on the mound, allowing no runs, only four hits, and racking up six strikeouts. Noah Kirk sparked the offense with a lead-off home run that set the tone for the game, leading to a collective 13-hit performance and six total runs for SVLL.

Defensively, the team was locked in, according to the SVLL president, turning two double plays to stop any momentum from the Park View. “It was a complete team effort and an incredible championship performance by our 12U All Stars,” Griffin said.

Softball state
California District 66 took the lead three years ago with the establishment of a softball program in Lemon Grove and Las Palmas that has grown in successive years. District 42 established its own program through South Bay Little League in 2024.

Teams from the two adjoining districts engage one another during regular season play.

Growth has been substantial to the point that District 42’s South Bay Little League hosted this year’s 11U and 12U-D Southern California state championship tournaments at Max Field in south Chula Vista.

“Lemon Grove, Encanto, Skyline, as well as Las Palmas and National City American, just north of our District 42 are showing a surge in softball registrations and it appears the girls are enthusiastic about playing softball,” Lucero said. “I’m so proud of (South Bay Little League) president Mario Montes and board member Sidney Montes, a husband and wife team, as well as their board of directors, for starting this important program.

“South Bay Little League has registered about 1,500 girls playing in our summer, fall and spring softball Little League program. Our other leagues in District 42 have taken notice from South Bay Little League that softball in the South County is thriving.”

District 42 fielded all-star softball teams in the 10U, 11U, 12U and Junior divisions in this year’s SoCal tournament.

South Bay Little League won the 11U title with nothing short of a dominating showing with wins over West Lancaster (19-6, first round), Reid Park (26-3, second round), Sunset Community (22-5, semifinals) and West Lancaster (14-4, championship game).

Lucero noted the positive economic impact of the event with teams from as far as Lancaster staying in local hotels and eating at nearby restaurants to boost Chula Vista’s business community.
