SWC at national contests

by Xiomara Gerardo

Southwestern College is making history this spring as students from its automotive engineering and architecture programs compete in two prestigious national engineering and design challenges. These events mark the first time the college will be represented at this level, with teams competing with top-tier universities from across North America.

From April 25 to April 27, three teams of architecture students will participate in the 2025 Design Village Competition at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. During the 48-hour immersive event, 21 students will design, build and inhabit temporary structures, examining both their creative vision and structural ingenuity, all in accordance with Cal Poly’s renowned “Learn-by-Doing” philosophy.

Design Village, a key event at Cal Poly’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design, attracts the best young designers from top universities across the country. Southwestern College’s participation is a rare opportunity for community college students to showcase their talents on a national level.

A few days later, from May 1 through May 4, the college’s Jag Racing team will compete in the Baja SAE off-road engineering competition in Marana, Arizona. The only community college team among 72 collegiate competitors, the Jag Racing team will face off against universities such as Cornell, UCLA, Virginia Tech and Purdue.
The team, made up of 34 students from the college’s automotive technology, engineering, and business programs, has designed, built and tested its own all-terrain vehicle as part of Southwestern’s MESA program, which supports underrepresented students in STEM fields.

The school states that these historic competitions highlight Southwestern College’s commitment to project-based learning and its role in preparing students to excel on a national level.
