Chula Vista hears public park input

by Xiomara Gerardo

The City of Chula Vista is moving forward with plans for a new park at the corner of Oxford Street and Fourth Avenue following initial community input gathered through a public meeting and an ongoing online survey.

A public meeting was held on July 30 at the South Chula Vista Library to collect feedback from residents on the park’s potential design and amenities. The 0.46-acre site, formerly home to Chula Vista Fire Station No. 5, sits within the same block as Lauderbach Park and Lauderbach Elementary School.

“The opportunity to transform the vacant lot at Oxford and Fourth into a public park is vital to the City’s mission to increase park space for residents of southwest Chula Vista,” said Laura Handschumacher, landscape architect for the City of Chula Vista. “In addition to providing increased amenities for surrounding residents, this corner park will serve as an outdoor retreat for local schools and businesses.”

The proposed site meets the definition of an Urban Park under the city’s Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Urban Parks are typically 0 to 4 acres in size and serve the daily recreational needs of nearby residents.
The new park is expected to benefit surrounding neighborhoods, schools and businesses. Community feedback will play a key role in shaping the Park Master Plan, which will guide the development of the site.

Residents can continue to share their input through an online survey, available through November 2025. For more information or to access the survey, visit www.chulavistaca.gov/parks.
