Celebrating heritage, embracing inclusion

Each October, Southwestern College celebrates the vibrant cultures and enduring contributions of both Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15–October 15) and Filipino American History Month.

This year, we come together during a time in our country that calls for reflection, resilience, and renewed unity.

Across our nation, families continue to face economic uncertainty, divisive rhetoric, and the ongoing impacts of a global pandemic that has reshaped education, work, and connection. Yet, alongside these challenges, we’ve witnessed a powerful resurgence of community organizing, civic engagement, and cultural pride, often led by the very communities we honor this month.

At Southwestern College, we are proud to serve a richly diverse student body, many of whom identify as Hispanic/Latinx and Filipino American. These communities have long been integral to the social, cultural, and economic fabric of our region. From the fields to the frontlines, classrooms to council chambers, their impact is felt daily in ways both profound and personal.

“Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at Southwestern College is deeply meaningful. It allows me to reflect on my family’s journey and achievements while helping me learn more about myself,” shared Leonardo Luna, Southwestern College student and member of the Puente Learning Community.

“Being part of this celebration connects me to a larger community of Latinos who have walked this path and succeeded professionally. It reminds me that I’m not just a student here, I’m part of something bigger than myself.”

As educators, our responsibility extends beyond academics. We must ensure every student feels seen, heard, and valued. This means not only recognizing heritage but also creating spaces where all voices thrive. Through celebrations, artistic expression, storytelling, and meaningful dialogue, we cultivate a campus community where cultures are honored, inclusion is practiced, and every voice is empowered.

Our commitment to equity goes beyond the classroom walls. We invite the South County community to join us in these celebrations, to listen, learn, and build bridges across cultures. When we embrace the fullness of our collective heritage, we grow stronger together. In that spirit, all are invited to our Filipino American History Month Flag Raising on October 9 at noon, at the corner of H Street & Otay Lakes Road where you can enjoy cultural performance and sample Filipino cuisine.

“Celebrating Filipino Heritage Month on campus feels like a meaningful and welcomed acknowledgment of who we are,” said EJ Bagaporo, Southwestern College student. “This celebration brings us together and highlights that we are a proud and vibrant part of campus life and our community. I hope people will come out and join us this year.”

Thank you for your continued support of Southwestern College and for being part of a community that honors differing cultures and worldview perspectives and most importantly, uplifts every story.

Mark Sanchez, Ed.D. is Superintendent/President of Southwestern College.
