Celebrate awareness, tradition & community in Downtown Chula Vista
October in Downtown Chula Vista is filled with opportunities to connect, celebrate, and give back. From supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month to honoring cultural traditions and unveiling a vibrant new landmark, the city is coming together to shine a light on resilience, remembrance, and community pride.
Honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Throughout October, Downtown Chula Vista is highlighting local businesses that offer compassionate services for those experiencing hair loss or thinning following chemo and radiation treatments. Loving You Through It, a non-profit located inside Rico’s on Third and run by owner Snooky Rico, provides a safe and supportive space for those navigating the challenges of cancer treatment. Nearby, Mane Solutions, owned by non-surgical hair restoration specialist Rosa Rubio, brings over 22 years of expertise in helping men and women regain confidence through custom hair restoration solutions.
Several salons along Third Avenue also specialize in services for thinning hair, ensuring that clients feel cared for at every stage of their journey. Barbershop Heaven works with clients who have newly transplanted hair to cut and style. Champagne Hair Salon offers non-surgical hair enhancement using 100% human hair for natural-looking replacements. Shear Envy Salon & Spa provides personalized suggestions for thinning hair, while Hidden Beauty Salon is known for haircuts that add volume and lift.
A Community Celebration to Look Forward to
On Saturday, November 1st, Downtown Chula Vista will gear up for their 5th annual Día de los Muertos Celebration, honoring those who have passed with colorful altars, live music, and cultural performances that pay homage to this cherished tradition.
Guests can enjoy a lowrider show with altars (ofrendas) in their trunks, shop unique artisan goods at Mercado by Las Jefas, and savor delicious bites and sips while exploring the neighborhood’s colorful installations, including giant alebrijes and Catrina figures crafted by local artists. A community altar on Davidson Street invites attendees to bring photos and tokens to honor someone special, creating a meaningful centerpiece for the evening.
Attendees are also encouraged to participate in the altar contest offering cash prizes, or the Catrín/Catrina costume competition, with categories for youth, adults, and couples! You can sign up for the contests on the Dia de los Muertos event page on the Downtown Chula Vista website.
New Additions to the Neighborhood
Adding to the excitement, Downtown Chula Vista will unveil its newest landmark with the debut of the Heritage Chair this month. Modeled after a traditional hacienda chair, the installation, created by San Diego Urban Timber artists Michelle Natividad and Jessica Van Arsdale, serves as a bold tribute to Chula Vista’s roots and community pride. Painted in vibrant colors and adorned with hand-painted scenery, the Heritage Chair will become a must-see destination and photo spot for residents and visitors alike.
October is shaping up to be a busy month in Downtown Chula Vista, and you’re not going to want to miss any of it!
