Southwestern Lady Jags secure PCAC women’s soccer championship
It was nothing but cheers as Southwestern College recorded its third Pacific Coast Athletic Conference women’s soccer championship in the past eight years with a commanding 12-2-2 conference mark, 15-4-4 overall.
The Lady Jaguars finished the 2025 season with a 0.813 winning percentage matched by MiraCosta College. Southwestern finished with one more win than MiraCosta and one more loss. Mira Costa had two more ties.
Palomar College finished in third place with a 9-3-4 conference record and 0.688 winning percentage.
MiraCosta finished 13-4-7 overall while Palomar was 11-5-5.
San Diego Miramar College finished in fourth place in the conference standings at 9-4-3, 11-7-4 overall.
Southwestern, which finished with PCAC championships in 2018 and 2022, finished with the No. 8 regional ranking, No. 17 in the state.
“Our goal was to form a team with mostly freshmen where we could extract everyone’s top potential,” SWC head coach Carolina Soto said. “We wanted to bring the championship PCAC conference title back to South Bay.”
The Lady Jaguars completed an equally prodigious 2024 season with a 19-2-1 record but fell shy of capturing the conference title while finishing 0.063 percentage points behind MiraCosta.
SWC finished 14-1-1 in conference play while MiraCosta (17-5-1) overall) finished 15-0-1 against PCAC foes. The Lady Jags tied 0-0 and lost 3-2 to the Lady Spartans but were perfect against everyone else in regular season play.
SWC ended its 2024 season with a 1-0 loss to Santa Monica in the second round of the regional playoffs. MiraCosta also ended its playoff odyssey with a second-round loss to Chaffey.
The Lady Jags didn’t let things get away this past season.
Southwestern’s two losses in 2025 came against MiraCosta (3-1 on Sept 26) and Palomar (2-1 on Oct. 31). The Lady Jags tied San Diego Mesa (2-2 on Sept. 16) and Mira Costa (1-1 on Oct. 28).
Southwestern rebounded to win its final three conference matches with shutout victories to clinch the PCAC championship.
“Our success came from the unity we formed and accepting each other with our diverse qualifies,” Soto said. “All putting in the work for one common goal: Team. Culture and program culture are about giving it our best every day. Resilience is key.”
Melany Perez keyed the team in scoring with 10 goals (20 points), followed by Daisy Velez Barron with eight goals and two assists (18 points). Three players tied with 12 points: Rebeca Perez (five goals, two assists), Camila Mendoza (four goals, four assists) and Katelyn Romo (three goals, six assists).
Goalkeeper Aaliyah Campbell finished with an 11-2 record and 0.900 save percentage.
Southwestern ended regular season play with a 3-0 non-conference loss to San Bernardino Valley but advanced to the opening round of the Southern California regional playoffs as the No. 11 seed. The Lady Jags recorded a 1-0 win over 22nd-seeded Ventura (9-7-6) on Nov. 19 at Bonita Vista High School on a goal by Perez, assisted by Alexandrea Ramirez, and shutout by Campbell (nine saves).
Southwestern saw its season end in a 3-0 loss to sixth-seeded Mt. San Antonio College (13-4-4) in the second round on Nov. 22. Mt. SAC out-shot SWC 18-4 with Campbell called on to make 15 saves.
In the women’s state final, Sierra (19-2-4) claimed its first championship in program history by defeating Golden West (15-5-7) by a score of 2-0 Dec. 7 at Saddleback College.
In the men’s final, Cerritos (17-6-3) defeated Hartnell (18-4-4), 2-1, in overtime to secure its fifth state title in program history, the first since 2018.
