Otay Ranch Town Center brings back ‘Pink & Popcorn’ with music, movies, and spirit
Grab your pink sparkles and “Wicked”-inspired wings — Otay Ranch Town Center is turning up the fun for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On Tuesday, Oct. 7, the Chula Vista shopping hub will host the return of its hit “Pink & Popcorn” event, a lively celebration that blends laughter, learning, and a little movie magic.
There will be everything from photo booths and DJs spinning retro hits to giveaways and a “Wicked” screening, the night will offer something for the whole community. Last year’s debut was such a hit that the center knew it had to do it again, said organizers.“We had such a positive response last year that we knew early on we wanted to bring the event back for 2025,” said Tim Kilcourse, general manager at Otay Ranch Town Center. “People loved the pre-movie festivities such as our DJ, the ‘Power of Pink’ photo booth, and Warrior Wall, so we knew we had to bring those back. Our guests loved the opportunity to interact with their neighbors before the movie began.”
This year, “Wicked” takes center stage, and there’s lots of excitement already brewing.
“The event is designed to celebrate the power of pink, and “Wicked” has such strong, empowered leads,” Kilcourse said. “Glinda owns her ‘pink-ness,’ and this year, with “Wicked” For Good coming out, it felt like a perfect match. It’s all about fun, empowerment, and bringing people together.”
The event also carries a meaningful purpose as the “Warrior Wall,” on display in the center throughout the month, allows residents to leave personalized ribbons honoring loved ones currently battling breast cancer, survivors, or those who have passed.
“It’s inspiring and uplifting to see so many people leave names of loved ones at all stages in the fight,” Kilcourse said. “We hope even more neighbors participate this year.”
Partnerships with organizations like La Maestra Community Health Centers and the Helen Knoll Foundation bring education and resources to guests in an approachable way.
“We love being a true ‘Town Center’ for our community,” Kilcourse said. “Part of that role is bringing services, education, and programs to our guests throughout the year. We are proud to welcome two organizations that provide valuable services relating to women’s and breast health right here for our neighbors.”
Of course, balancing fun and education is part of the planning magic, too.
“We talk to our community and partners to craft an event that both educates and uplifts,” Kilcourse said. “We combine elements that encourage laughter and fun, like the screening and photo booth, with those that empower and educate, such as the Warrior Wall and health booths.”
For families and neighbors who love to mingle, the evening is packed with opportunities. Starting at 5 p.m., guests can enjoy live DJ music, giveaways, and photo ops before settling into the Dining Pavilion for the movie.
“Our operations team works hard to ensure the layout accommodates everyone comfortably,” Kilcourse said. “New this year, we are adding special outdoor movie chairs and beanbag seating so everyone can enjoy the show in style.”
A number of local businesses are also joining the celebration, he said.
“We hold this event the same night as our weekly Farmers Market, and guests are encouraged to grab dinner or a snack while enjoying the event,” Kilcourse said. “Several tenants, like Namaste Fitness, also do themed storefront displays during the month, contributing to our center-wide commitment to breast cancer awareness.”
Beyond the music, popcorn, and fun, Kilcourse said real magic is in the sense of community the event fosters.
“We always aim to create a space where neighbors, tenants, and partners can come together,” he said. “This event isn’t just about a movie; it’s about celebrating hope, resilience, and the power of supporting each other.”
Guests are encouraged to dress in pink or “Wicked”-inspired looks, with prizes awarded by the DJ between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Seating opens at 6:30 p.m., with the screening starting at 7 p.m. Alcohol is not permitted, but the event promises a full evening of joy, inspiration, and community spirit.
“Last year we were thrilled to create a new event for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, harnessing the power of accessible education and celebrating the warriors in this fight,” Kilcourse said. “We welcome all our neighbors to join us for a fun, uplifting night at the heart of our true town center.”
Whether you’re snapping selfies at the photo booth, picking up a pink ribbon for a loved one, or just settling in to enjoy the show, “Pink & Popcorn” is designed to remind everyone that a little fun, a little awareness, and a whole lot of community can make a big difference.
