Cops clear firearms off streets
Nearly 140 unwanted firearms were turned in by residents at a South Bay gun safety event on Dec. 13, reflecting strong community participation in efforts to keep local streets safe.
The event, held at the South Bay Superior Court, 500 Third Ave., was hosted by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with the District Attorney’s Office, Chula Vista Police Department, National City Police Department, and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Division of Adult Parole Operations.
A total of 138 firearms were surrendered, including handguns, rifles, shotguns, and assault weapons. Participants received $100 gift cards for handguns, rifles, and shotguns, and $200 for assault weapons. Free firearm lock boxes and trigger locks were also distributed to promote safe storage practices.
Sheriff’s deputy Lt. Kamon Harris called the turnout “good” and highlighted the collaboration between the community and law enforcement.
“What stood out most was the continued excellent collaboration between the community and local law enforcement,” he said.
Harris added that events like these help remove unwanted weapons from streets while building trust, particularly because participants could remain anonymous.
All firearms collected will be processed according to the law. Guns connected to criminal activity will be referred to by the appropriate agency, and stolen firearms will be returned to their owners. All other weapons will be destroyed.
Harris said the success of the event will guide future efforts.
“We plan to continue the Sheriff’s Office model to keep the event anonymous and incentivized, as well as continue to host the event alongside other local law enforcement partners,” he said.
The Sheriff’s Office thanked residents for their support and commitment: “We are thankful for the community’s support in helping us make sure unwanted weapons stay out of the wrong hands, so they are not used in any crimes or put anyone’s lives in danger,” the office said.
Residents who missed Saturday’s event can still safely turn in firearms at any Sheriff’s station, substation, or participating law enforcement agency. Firearms should be unloaded and placed in the trunk of a vehicle until a deputy provides instructions.
The South Bay Gun Safety Event reflects ongoing efforts by the Sheriff’s Office and its partners to reduce gun violence and make communities safer.
