Fast times at CIF High: San Diego Section Track Finals

by Phillip Brents

The road to this year’s California state track and field meet started for a select cadre of runners and throwers at Saturday’s San Diego Section divisional championship meets: Division I at Del Norte High School, Division II at University City High School and Division III at Canyon Hills High School.

Student-athletes were competing for qualifying marks to this Saturday’s section championship meet at Mt. Carmel High School, the next step for advancing to the state meet May 29-30 in Clovis.

Also on tap were team championships in the three divisional meets. South Bay League champion Mater Dei Catholic High School recorded a meteoric runner-up finish in the Division III boys meet with 78 points — one point behind team champion Sage Creek. The Lady Crusaders fared well in the girls half of the meet with a fourth-place finish with 47 points, though well behind team champ La Jolla with 121.5 points.

Mesa League champion Eastlake finished 10th in the Division I girls standings while the Titan boys placed 11th.

The top six place-finishers in each event received medals.

There were a lot of notable marks turned in by Metro Conference participants.

Eastlake senior Ryan Branco set schools records in both the 100 dash (fourth, 10.66) and 200 dash (second, 21.54) at the Division I meet.

Two Metro runners crossed the finish line in first place in the Division I meet: Eastlake sophomore Kareli Rascon (2:11.44 in the girls 800 run) and Lady Titan sophomore Isabelle Taylor-Dixon (42.91 in the girls 300 low hurdles) — both lifetime bests.

Rascon, who already holds the school record in the 400 dash at 56.39, dug deep to hold onto first place in the final 25 meters with a 0.27-second win.

The 300 hurdles race was even more dramatic as Taylor-Dixon made up significant ground over the final two hurdles to cross the finish line in a dead heat with 100 low hurdles gold medalist Gabrielle Thomas of Grossmont, Both runners lunged at the electronic beam while skidding on the pavement. Taylor-Dixon won in 42.91 while Thomas got the silver medal in 42.93 — just 0.02 seconds apart.

“I saw her ahead of me and I knew I had to catch her,” Taylor-Dixon, who placed 0.70 behind Thomas (14.00) in the preceding 100 lows.

Taylor-Dixon, the Mesa League Female Track Athlete of the Meet at the preceding conference finals, turned in a showcase day with fourth-place finishes in both the 100 low hurdles (14.70) and triple jump (36-11). She also ran a leg on Eastlake’s sixth-place 4×400 relay team.

Bonita Vista senior Renee Khuong, the school record-holder in the 800 and 3200 runs, was the South County Division I distance queen with a third-place finish in the 1600 run (4:59.69)

A highlight for local teams came in the 4×800 relays as Eastlake (8:14.94) placed runner-up in the boys field, followed by Olympian (8:19.72) in third.

Division III
Gold medals went to four Mater Dei Catholic athletes at the Division III meet: sophomore Jasir Fontenot (13.81) in the boys 110 high hurdles, junior Darius Gibbs in the boys 300 intermediate hurdles (41.02), senior Mekhi Oluwa in the boys long jump (23-10.75) and triple jump (44-7.5) and senior Elise Datuin in the girls 400 dash (56.37).

Oluwa is a returning state medalist in the long jump (seventh, 22-8.5) while Fontenot won the state title in the 110 hurdles with a PR of 13.21 while competing last year for San Diego High.

Mater Dei Catholic won the 4×100 girls relay in 49.36 courtesy of sophomore Kristelle Gonzalez and seniors Datuin, Cami Givens and Promise Martin.

Silver medals went to Oluwa in the boys 100 dash (11.02) and 110 high hurdles (14.77) while bronze medals went to Fontenot (11.06) in the 100 dash and Datuin in the girls 200 dash (25.88).

Additionally, Mater Dei Catholic finished third in the boys 4×100 relay (43.23) and 4×400 relay (3:29.26).

Eastern exposure: Steele Canyon Lady Cougars on top of Division I standings

Steele Canyon High School sped to this year’s Grossmont Hills League girls track and field dual meet championship while Helix emerged on top on the boys side.

Both teams continued to hammer the competition at last Saturday’s San Diego Section Division I championship meet at Del Norte High School.

Steele Canyon won the girls team championship with a seven-point margin over runner-up Rancho Bernardo while Helix finished fourth in the boys field — just 5.25 points out of second place.

The top six place-finishers in all three divisional meets received medals.

The Lady Cougars had to employ a wheelbarrow to cart off all their winnings.

Steele Canyon’s gold medal honor roll included first-place finishes in the girls 4×100 relay (46.46) and 4×400 relay (3:49.53), individual silver medals by junior Evie Allison in the girls l00 low hurdles (14.19) and freshman Livia Allison in the long jump (18-11.5) and bronze medals by sophomore Aniya Scott in the 100 dash (11.89), sophomore Daylani Daniels in the 400 dash (57.36) and Evie Allison in the 300 low hurdles (43.93).

Livia Allison also was fourth in the 200 dash (24.31).

The 4×100 relay set a school record at the preceding Grossmont Conference championship meet. Members include Evie Allison, Scott, senior Asia Broussard and Livia Allison. The 4×400 unit includes sophomore Aarys Wallace, Daniels, junior Elisha Lewis and Livia Allison.

“My expectations were to do all I could since I took a year off from youth club to high school,” Livia Allison piped up. “I’m definitely enjoying the experience as I’m on the A team with my sister in the 4×100 relay. It feels very good. I couldn’t have done it without my coaches, I wasn’t that good at the beginning of the season.”

Grossmont finished fourth in the Division I girls field with 49.5 points behind senior Gabrielle Thomas in the 100 low hurdles (first place, 14.00) and 300 low hurdles (second place, 42.93), sophomore Miley Christianson in the shot put (second place, 38-1.5) and discus throw (second place, 119-7) and junior Aakash Price in the high jump (second place, 5-4).

Thomas appeared a step away from sweeping the hurdles events before Eastlake sophomore Isabelle Taylor-Dixon made up an imposing deficit on the last couple hurdles in the 300s. As the pair closed on the finish line, both front-runners lunged, skidding to a stop on the pavement. Taylor-Dixon (42.91) won by a scant 0.02 seconds. It was the best race of the day.

“I just saw her in front of me, I thought I had to catch her,” said Taylor Dixon, who had previously finished 0.70 second behind Thomas in the l00 lows.

Helix finished fifth in the Division I girls field with 46 points. Freshman Ava Parker was the catalyst with gold medals in the 200 dash (23.73) and 400 dash (54.59).

The quartet of sophomores Dajah Herrod and Anaira Martinez, junior Kate Weaver and Parker placed runner-up to the ladies of Steele in the 4×400 relay (3:53.74). Weaver was fourth in the girls 1600 run (4:59.69).

Granite Hills junior Damian Jones (47.80 in the 400 dash) and sophomore Niko Williams (14.31 in the 110 high hurdles) each won Division I gold medals while Helix senior Aiden De Hoyos (28.15 in the 300 intermediate hurdles) also scored a first-place finish.

Grossmont junior Torin Sotelo cleared 16-6 to claim the gold medal in the boys pole vault.

Helix senior Jackson Ellis was second in the 400 dash (47.84) — 0.04 behind Jones.

Grossmont senior Taim Alobaidi was second in both the 110 hurdles (14.54) and 300 hurdles (38.50).

Helix sophomore Trey Edwards was second in the high jump at 6-0 while Granite Hills senior P.J. Johnson was third in the long jump (22-1.75)

Jones also was third in the 200 dash (21.64). Steele senior Jacob Henton was third in the 100 dash (10.63).

De Hoyos was fourth in the 110 hurdles (14.74) while Williams was fourth in the 300 hurdles (39.38).

In relays, Granite was second in the 4×100 (41.79) while Helix placed runner-up in the 4×400 (3:19.66).

Jones has experienced a comeback season of note. “I broke my kneecap two years ago in football — to battle back and be No. 1 in Division I means a lot,” he said.
