Little League TOC, All-Stars tournaments medal champions

by Phillip Brents

Sites have been set for the upcoming California Section 7 Little League championship tournaments. District 66 Little League will host three divisions: 12U, Junior and Senior. East County District 41 will host the Intermediate Division and 10U Division while El Centro District 22 will host the 11U Division tournament.

The section tournaments feature the all-stars champions from the four districts.

The Junior and Senior divisions get under way Saturday, June 27, at District 66’s Spring Valley field, 1312 Sweetwater Lane.

The Junior Division lineup (ages 12-14) runs through July 2 and includes District 41 Singing Hills, District 42 Imperial Beach, District 66 Spring Valley and District 22 Imperial.

The Senior Division lineup (ages 13-16) runs through July 1 and includes District 66 Spring Valley, District 41 Jamul and District 42 Park View.

The 12U Division is scheduled to run July 11-16 with teams to be determined. Teams are also still to be determined for the 10U and 11U divisions as district play tees off.

District 41 will host the 10U All-Stars and Intermediate sectional tournaments while District 22 will host the 11U All-stars sectional tournament.

The Intermediate (50/70) lineup includes ages 11-13 and provides a bridge between Little League’s younger field dimensions and those of the older age divisions.

District 42 tournament play starts Saturday, June 27, in all three divisions: 10U, 11U and 12U. Chula Vista American and Little League and Eastlake Little League will serve as field sites.

Park View Little League will host championship games in all three divisions on July 5. A double-elimination format applies.

Eight teams are entered in both the 10U and 11U divisions while seven teams are entered in the 12U division.

The 10U and 11U divisions stop at the state level while the other divisions hold national championship tournaments.

District 42: Around the horn
Even though the bulk of the competition is still ahead, a lot has already transpired. The Tournament of Champions competition featured six divisions: 6U, 7U, 8U, 9U, Minor and Major. The three older all-stars divisions — Intermediate, Junior and Senior — also got underway.

TOC semifinals and championship games started June 18 at Imperial Beach Little League and concluded Monday and Tuesday at the same site.

Semifinal games in the 6U division produced two winners: Sweetwater Valley 12-7 over Park View and Eastlake 17-7 over Imperial Beach. Sweetwater Valley defeated Eastlake, 9-2, in Saturday’s division championship game.

Semifinal games in the 7U division took place last Friday. Park View eliminated Imperial Beach 12-0 while Sweetwater Valley blanked Eastlake by the same score. Both winners advanced to Monday’s championship game.

Sweetwater won 10-6.

Semifinals games in the 8U division took place Saturday. Park View shut out Eastlake by a score of 9-0 while Sweetwater Valley topped South Bay 11-1 to set up Tuesday’s division final between Park View and Sweetwater Valley.

Sweetwater Valley won 9-7.

Semifinal games in the 9U division took place on June 18. Eastlake defeated Sweetwater Valley 12-0, while Park View defeated South Bay 7-2. Eastlake went on to blank Park View 12-0 in Saturday’s division championship game.

More to come
|The three upper-age all-stars divisions wrapped up district play Saturday at Park View Little League to provide a head start on the marquee 10U, 11U and 12U divisions.

“It’s heartwarming to see kids start Little League in the 6U Division, and years later see them participate in the older divisions,” District 42 administrator Ernie Lucero said. “At this point in their Little League journey, I’m hopeful these young teens will continue playing ball after Little League. Some will go on as players for their school, and others are now serving as umpires for District 42 tournaments.”

The older age divisions in District 42 appear to be gaining more interest.

Eastlake kicked off Saturday’s triple-header with a 1-0 win over Sweetwater Valley in the Intermediate Division. Eastlake finished 4-0 in the six-team tournament to punch its ticket to the Section 7 tournament hosted by District 41.

Eastlake’s championship run included prior victories against Imperial Beach (19-3 in the first round), Park View (14-12 in the second round) and Sweetwater Valley (6-5 in the winners bracket final).

Sweetwater Valley defeated Park View, 22-6, in the challenger bracket final.

Imperial Beach extinguished a drought of 27 years without an All-Stars championship game victory in the Juniors Division after squeezing past Chula Vista American 4-3.

CV American led 3-2 before Imperial Beach rallied to take the lead late in the game and held on.

“Hard work and practicing gave us the start we needed to win the tournament,” IB manager Josh Najera said.

Angel Sanchez threw 92 pitches with six strikeouts while E.Z. Najera came into close out the game with 17 pitches and two strikeouts in the seventh inning.

In the hitting department, Gabriel Krenzel tied the score with an RBI and Jonathan Sanchez then put Imperial Beach in the lead. Dominic Najera and Eli Magana also drove runs.

Logan Hinojos pitched five and two-thirds innings for CVA, tossing 94 pitches with seven strikeouts. Josh Juarez had two RBI.

CVA made the most of three hits in the game.

Seven teams participated in the division. Imperial Beach defeated Eastlake, 1-0, in the first round and kept the momentum going with a 14-4 win over Southwest in its second game. IB out-slugged Sweetwater Valley, 10-3, in the winners bracket final to earn a berth in the division final.

IB allowed 10 runs in the four games while scoring 29 runs.

King Sanchez threw a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts while Angel Hernandez notched the game-winning RBI in the 1-0 win over Eastlake.

Dom Najera had a big day at the plate in the 10-3 win over Sweetwater Valley by going three-for-four with four RBI.

Park View had no trouble scoring runs in the Senior Division championship game after plating five runs in the top of the first inning and tacking on five more runs in the second inning for a commanding 10-run run.

Zachary Phillips, who just completed his sophomore year at Otay Ranch High School, belted a three-run home run to expand on a 7-0 lead in the second inning.

Park View used four pitchers in the game, Jude Lopez started on the mound, followed by Trevor Mariscal. Noah Medina took over in the bottom of the fourth inning and Ian Puente pitched the final fifth inning in the run-rule contest.

Phillips went two-for-three at the plate with five RBI while Alexander Solis also went two-for-three with four RBI.

Park View will now represent the district in the upcoming Section 7 tournament.

Will Bleisch serves as manager while coaches include Dennis Diaz and Marco Roman.

The newly crowned district champions look to make a statement this summer after out-scoring opponents 48-4 in an imposing 3-0 run through the bracket.

“We have pitching, defense and power — we have the whole package,” Bleisch said. “We just have to trust each other to get it done.”

Park View defeated South Bay 21-3 in its first game and out-scored Eastlake 12-1 in its second game in the six-team tournament.

Sweetwater Valley dropped a high-scoring 22-19 decision to Eastlake in the first round and battled back with victories over South Bay (9-4) and Eastlake (5-0) in the double-elimination tournament to reach the championship game.

Park View Little League’s boundaries include Otay Ranch, Olympian and Mater Dei Catholic high schools.

Lopez and Medina also just completed their sophomore seasons at Otay Ranch while Puente and Mariscal both just completed their junior seasons there.

Route 66
California District 66 Little League serves parts of both South County (National City, Paradise Hills) and East County (Spring Valley, Lemon Grove) and southeast San Diego.

District administrator Rolland Slade said the district has contracted from 10 leagues to eight for the 2026 season. Las Palmas and National City American combined as did Encanto and Skyline.

The California District 66 lineup now includes San Diego American, San Diego Southeastern, Encanto, Las Palmas, Lemon Grove, Spring Valley, Twin Hills and Valley De Oro.

“Our numbers overall have remained the same … I believe that is because of the addition of softball,” Slade said. “Lemon Grove and Las Palmas have developed solid programs.

“The softball teams are go directly from district to state. Lemon Grove will be sending teams to the 8-9-10 (10U), 9-10-11 (11U), Little League (12U) and Junior League tournaments. Las Palmas will be sending a team to the Senior League softball state tournament.”

On the youth baseball front, District 66 has concluded its own Tournament of Champions competition as well as all-stars play in both the Junior Division and Senior Division. The 10U, 11U and 12U all-stars divisions start up play this weekend.

Last year’s Senior Division champion Lemon Grove/Spring Valley combo team — the Sixtye6ers — advanced to the Senior League World Series tournament in Easley, S.C. after compiling a blistering 22-1 tournament run.

The team’s titles included those at the District 66, Section 7, Southern California state and Western Region levels. The team finished 1-2 at the international drfaw tournament with a 9-7 win over the Texas Southwest Zone champions and 7-1 and 7-2 losses to South Carolina District 1 host team.

The South Carolina team went on to win the United States division en route to a runner-up finish against Caribbean Zone champion Puerto Rico.

Overall, Lemon Grove Little League posted a highly successful 2025 season with eight championship banners across baseball and softball.
