JC soccer season continues for Southwestern College
Southwestern College’s women’s soccer team appeared to get the result it wanted in last Friday’s 1-0 victory at MiraCosta College. Sophia Neri netted the game-winning goal in the second half as Samantha Gudino posted a 12-save shutout.
Both Southwestern and MiraCosta were neck and neck atop the PCAC standings and it appeared the Lady Jaguars had finally managed to open up some space.
But all that vanished in a 3-1 home field loss to Palomar College on Tuesday. The Lady Comets opened up a shocking 3-0 lead before Diamel Patino averted a shutout, assisted by Rebecca Perez. Gudino had eight saves on 11 shots.
Southwestern has three matches remaining in regular season play: Friday at Grossmont, next Tuesday at San Diego Mesa and Nov. 10 against visiting Cuymaca.
Current standings feature the Lady Jags on top with a 9-1-3 record and 0.808 winning percentage, immediately followed by MiraCosta at 8-1-3 with a 0.792 winning percentage. San Diego Miramar is in third place with an 8-2-3 record and 0.731 winning percentage, followed by San Deigo Mesa at 7-1-4 with a 0.750 winning percentage.
Those are the top four teams in the standings.

In terms of standings points, Southwestern holds a three-point edge on MiraCosta, though the Lady Spartans have played one fewer match and thus have three points in hand.

The Southwestern men’s team snapped a two-game losing streak with an 11-0 win over San Diego Mesa on Tuesday but now sit well off the pace from first place. The Jaguars fell, 3-0, at MiraCosta last Friday after absorbing a 2-1 home defeat by Palomar the prior Tuesday.
Through 10 games, MiraCosta tops the PCAC standings with an 8-1-1 record and 25 points, followed by Cuyamaca with a 6-1-3 record and 21 points in second place and Southwestern with a 5-2-3 record and 18 points in third place.
