Volunteers roll up sleeves for annual Beautify Chula Vista Day

by Debbie Sklar

Grab your gloves and get ready to roll up your sleeves—Chula Vista is calling on residents to help give the city a good fall spruce-up. The 22nd Annual Beautify Chula Vista Day happens Saturday, Oct. 18, from 8 a.m. to noon, and organizers say it’s all about community pride in action.

Each year, hundreds of volunteers—families, students, neighbors, and local organizations—fan out across the city to tackle graffiti, litter, and overgrown spaces. Last year alone, more than 400 volunteers hauled away thousands of pounds of trash, leaving a visible mark on neighborhoods, creeks, and canyons.

Participants can kick off their morning at one of two check-in sites: Loma Verde Community Center (1420 Loma Lane) or Chula Vista City Hall (276 Fourth Ave.). After a short orientation, volunteers get supplies, safety gear, and their cleanup assignments. The work can get messy, but that’s part of the fun—and part of what makes the results so satisfying.

Organizers are hoping for another strong turnout this year to keep the momentum going. Volunteers are asked to sign up ahead of time at BeautifyChulaVista.org, wear sturdy shoes, bring reusable water bottles, and pack snacks or lunch for the morning. Students can also earn community service hours for their participation.

It’s a few hours of effort that pays off in a cleaner, greener, more welcoming city—proof that small acts, done together, can make a big difference.
