Travelers face new Reality with new identification law in place
Travelers departing from San Diego International Airport must now show a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another TSA-accepted form of identification to board domestic flights, under new federal regulations that took effect May 7.
The Transportation Security Administration began enforcing the REAL ID requirement this week, marking a significant shift in travel documentation for passengers ages 18 and older.
Airport officials at San Diego’s airport are advising travelers to arrive early to allow extra time at security checkpoints as passengers adjust to the new rules.
“More than 40,000 passengers depart from SAN each day and with the beginning of REAL ID enforcement we anticipate possible delays,” said Kimberly Becker, President and CEO, San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. “To ensure a smooth experience through SAN, we advise travelers to arrive two hours before domestic flights and three hours for international flights.”
REAL ID-compliant California driver’s licenses are marked with a golden bear and a star in the upper right corner. Licenses without this symbol are no longer valid for boarding commercial flights within the United States.
Travelers without a REAL ID may still fly if they present another TSA-accepted form of identification, such as a U.S. passport, passport card, Global Entry card, military ID or a federally recognized tribal ID. A full list of accepted identification is available at tsa.gov/real-id.
Passengers who do not present an approved form of ID can face delays, additional screening or be denied access to the security checkpoint.
Extra airport staff were stationed at both terminals this week to assist travelers and answer questions. REAL ID signage remains posted throughout the terminals as a reminder of the new requirement.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles continues to offer REAL ID appointments for those looking to upgrade their license. Officials urge anyone planning to fly in the coming months to check their ID status well in advance.
