Thousands seek new resort jobs

by Albert Fulcher

The new Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center, in collaboration with San Diego Workforce Partnership drew thousands of applicants at its first series of job hiring fairs on March 7 and 8 at Southwestern. This job fair is preparation for the 1,600-room bayfront resort, Marriott’s first Gaylord on the West Coast, opening on May 15 seeking to fill 800 positions across various departments.

Set to become a landmark destination in San Diego County, the Gaylord Pacific Resort represents a significant economic boost for the Chula Vista community. The resort will feature multiple restaurants, a luxurious spa, pools, and extensive convention space, making it a premier destination for both tourists and business travelers.

“Thousands of candidates brought updated resumes and dressed in professional attire and stood in long lines with the hope of landing on-the-spot, same-day interviews at the first two of five job fairs. Paulette Lopez, who arrived at 6 a.m. to wait in line (it opened at 10 a.m.) was the first person hired to work the front desk, greeting visitors from around the world. Also receiving a job offer was 19-year-old Matthew Garcia who slept in his car in the parking lot so he could be one of the first people in line for the job fair the following morning,” said Gaylord Pacifica in an email statement.

Due to the overwhelming demand for positions, on March 11, the Gaylord Pacific issued an update on their Instagram account for the upcoming job fairs on March 14, 15, and 16.
