Sockers, still in fans’ hearts, win 17th indoor soccer title
While the San Diego Sockers may have moved their base of operations from central San Diego to North County, the heartbeat of the team remains strong with diehard fans.
The Sockers won their 17th indoor soccer championship Monday night with a 10-3 drubbing of the Milwaukee Wave in front of 3,860 fans at Oceanside’s Frontwave Arena to capture the Major Arena Soccer League’s best-of-three Ron Newman Cup championship series two games to one.
The league’s championship trophy is fittingly named in honor of former San Diego Sockers head coach Ron Newman, who guiided the legendary franchise to lofty heights with 10 championship titles in 11 seasons in both the North American Soccer League and the Major Indoor Soccer League from 1981-82 to 1991-92.
Newman was likely smiling down on his former team after the Sockers defeated the Milwaukee Wave, 10-3, in front of 3,860 fans Monday night at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside to claim their 17th indoor soccer championship overall.
Sebastian Mendez recorded a hat trick, Finals MVP Leonardo de Oliveira added two goals and an assist and goalkeeper Chris Toth stopped nine of 12 shots to earn his first MASL title.
Toth is the son of former Sockers Legend Zoltan Toth, who backstopped the original Sockers to five MISL championships, to bridge the franchise timeline.
The elder Toth was named the MISL Goalkeeper of the Decade for the 1980s.

The top-seeded Sockers were forced into the decisive Game 3 in the best-of-three championship series after topping the third-seeded Wave, 5-4, in Milwaukee on April 22, and dropping a 7-2 matchup last Friday at Frontwave Arena. The loss to the Wave evened the series at a win apiece and came amid several player suspensions following post-game incidents in Game 1.
Charlie Gonzalez had a goal and two assists, Tavoy Morgan added a goal and assist and a sterline defensive effort capped the Game 1 victory.
Cesar Correa led Milwaukee with two goas and one assist in Game 2 turning a 4-2 advantage into a five-goal rout with three untended goals to disappoint a turnout of 5,521 San Diego fans.
Game 3 was tied 1-1 through the opening quarter before the hosts, no longer short-handed, took control, 7-1, at halftime.
People still do care about the team.
The Sockers defeated the fourth-seeded St. Louis Ambush, 6-5, in overtime on Sunday, April 19, to capture their best-of-three Ron Newman Cup semifinal series, two games to none, to advance to the best-of-three championship-round series against the third-seeded Milwaukee Wave.
The Sockers opened the semifinal series against St. Louis with a 6-5 win on Friday, April 17, in Missouri. Nick Perera scored two goals and collected one assist and goalkeeper Chris Toth made 14 saves to guide the Sockers to the Game 1 victory.
Game 2 was more dramatic as de Oliveira scored with 10.1 seconds left in regulation to force golden goal overtime and Perera added the game-winner at 9:01 of the sudden victory period in front of an appreciative gathering of 3,621 fans.
The Sockers were making a return trip to the Ron Newman Cup Finals after placing runner-up, two games to one, last season to the Chihuahua Savage.
The Sockers now own 17 indoor soccer championship banners: two in the North American Soccer League (1982, 1984), eight in the Major Indoor Soccer League (1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992), four in the Professional Arena Soccer League (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) and three Major Arena Soccer League (2021, 2022, 2026).
Milwaukee defeated the Strykers, two games to one, in the quarterfinals and upset Baltimore, two games to one, in the semifinals.
