Sharp to celebrate 50 years

by Xiomara Gerardo

Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a gala on Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center.

Hosted by the Sharp HealthCare Foundation, the event will raise funds for the hospital’s Emergency Department Transformation Project, expected to be completed in fall 2025.

The gala will feature keynote speakers, a live auction, musical performances, and a formal dinner.

Sharp Chula Vista’s Emergency Department treats more than 200 patients a day, making it one of the busiest in San Diego County. Planned improvements include expanded waiting areas, upgraded triage and phlebotomy stations, and the addition of an exterior vestibule to improve check-in, safety and comfort for patients and staff.

The transformation project also includes the creation of an Emergency Psychiatric Assessment Treatment and Healing (EmPATH) unit for patients with behavioral health needs.

Dr. Andres Smith, medical director of emergency services and gala co-chair, has worked at the hospital for nearly 25 years.

“I live in the South Bay, as do my family and friends,” Smith said. “Being a physician allows me to give back to my community through health care. Living close to the border has inspired me to participate in health care issues in San Diego and Tijuana.”

Sharp Chula Vista is the largest hospital in the South Bay and offers comprehensive programs in cardiovascular care, oncology, orthopedics and maternity care.
