Pickle of a time slated for downtown Chula Vista

by Debbie Sklar

Get ready for a day of friendly competition, community spirit, and good old-fashioned fun when the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club brings its legendary energy to the South Bay for the inaugural OMBAC on Third: Pickleball & Cornhole Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For one lively day, Third Avenue between E and F streets will transform into a pop-up sports arena, complete with about 10 pickleball courts and 30 cornhole lanes. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just in it for laughs —and maybe a cold drink— this event promises plenty of action, camaraderie, and Chula Vista flavor.

“This is the first of its kind block party combining two of the most popular sports right now,” said Tom Doyle, event Chair of OMBAC. “Cornhole and pickleball are perfect for people of all ages and skill levels. You don’t need to be an expert — just grab a friend and come give it a shot.”

While the competition will be fierce, the event’s true purpose hits closer to home. Proceeds benefit the Chula Vista Fire Department Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit supporting firefighter families and preserving local fire history — including restoring “The Goose,” a vintage 1923 Seagrave fire engine. “A portion of the proceeds also supports OMBAC Charities, which helps youth sports, education, and community programs across San Diego County,” Doyle said.

Pickleball fans can join the social division tournament, while cornhole players can choose between novice and advanced divisions. Spectators are welcome — admission is free. Expect live scoring via the Scoreholio app, music, community booths, and plenty of opportunities to soak up the South Bay sunshine. Participants will compete for bragging rights, official Selkirk Sport prizes, and the honor of being the first champions of this new OMBAC tradition.

“This event highlights the Chula Vista community and all it has to offer, while also helping OMBAC continue its charitable work,” Doyle said.

“We’re partnering with organizations like the Armed Services YMCA, SD Blood Bank, Rady Children’s Hospital, and the Chula Vista Fire Department Heritage Foundation to support the community in meaningful ways.”
