Options for college courses

by Xiomara Gerardo

Options Middle College High School will open Aug. 12, offering students the opportunity to earn both high school and college credits through a partnership with Southwestern Community College.

The program allows students to enroll in college-level courses while completing their high school education. The district says the initiative will help students develop time management, critical thinking and independent learning skills, while providing early exposure to college academics.

“We are incredibly proud of our district for offering this unique pathway for students,”Superintendent Dr. Moises G. Aguirre said. “This program will not only enhance their learning experience but also prepares them for future success in higher education and beyond. We believe that by providing our students with access to college courses, we are equipping them with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly competitive world.”

Dr. Mark Sanchez, superintendent/president of Southwestern College, said the college is committed to supporting students through access and mentorship.

“At Southwestern College, we believe college is for everyone — every student has amazing potential to be successful in college with the proper support and learning environment,”Sanchez said. “Hosting Options Middle College High School on our campus reflects our deep commitment to creating opportunities for students who show promise, potential, and determination, especially if they need a little extra support along the way. This program is about access, mentorship, and the belief that every student deserves a chance to build a strong foundation for a successful career.”

A press conference was held Aug. 6 to provide additional details about the program and its benefits to students and families.
Through the partnership with Southwestern Community College, students will have access to a range of courses and resources, including academic counseling, tutoring and extracurricular activities. The program is designed to prepare students academically, socially and emotionally for college.
