New clubhouse for kids coming to Chula Vista
Chula Vista is preparing for a new hub for youth development with the upcoming opening of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South County’s Escaya Clubhouse. The 10,000-square-foot, two-story facility will offer children and teens a safe, supportive space to explore interests, build confidence, and connect with positive mentors.
“Our inspiration comes from the commitment we made when we had to close our Chula Vista clubhouse in 2020,” said Stephanie James, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of South County. “As the area continues to develop, more youth need access to safe, high-quality afterschool and summer programs. Opening this clubhouse will allow us to meet those needs proactively and ensure young people have a place where they feel supported, inspired, and connected.”
The Escaya Clubhouse will expand the organization’s mission to inspire young people, especially those who need it most, to reach their full potential.
“The Escaya Clubhouse strengthens our ability to provide safe and equitable access to academic support, mentorship, and opportunities that help youth thrive,” James said.
The facility will include homework and tutoring areas, a tech and innovation lab, art and multipurpose rooms, a teen room, and recreation zones. Every space is designed to encourage creativity, collaboration, and engagement, giving youth a place to learn, socialize, and grow. James noted that ongoing community feedback will ensure the space continues to meet local families’ needs.
Youth will have access to a full range of programs: STEM, arts, sports and fitness, social-emotional learning, and leadership development. Daily Power Hour homework sessions, tutoring, and programs like DIY STEM and CareerLaunch will support academic achievement. Leadership programs such as Torch Club and Keystone Club, along with community service initiatives, will help youth develop responsibility, teamwork, and advocacy skills.
“Mentorship is at the heart of everything we do,” James said. “Our trained youth development professionals cultivate intentional, daily relationships with members to support their growth, confidence, and well-being. Volunteers also play a vital role by providing academic support, leading enrichment activities, and serving as positive role models.”
The Escaya Clubhouse is expected to serve 150–200 youth in its first year, with the capacity to grow. Innovative programs will include wellness, fitness, and mindfulness sessions, as well as opportunities for family engagement. Community support was essential.
Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott’s historic gift to Boys & Girls Clubs of America and 62 local Clubs helped make the Escaya Clubhouse possible, and local partner HomeFed championed the project since its inception. The city of Chula Vista also contributed to ensuring safe and accessible spaces for youth and supported long-term planning for the programs.
“We are so excited to return to Chula Vista and are grateful to Mayor McCann and the city of Chula Vista for its continued advocacy and support. This is such an exciting new chapter for the Boys & Girls Clubs of South County,” James said.
McCann and James attended the Nov. 6 press conference announcing the new Clubhouse, emphasizing its role in the community once it opens in 2026.
“Our youth are the heart of Chula Vista’s future,” Mayor McCann said. “By opening this Boys & Girls Clubs of South County Clubhouse, we’re giving them a safe, inspiring place to learn, grow, and become the leaders our community deserves.”
The Escaya Clubhouse will provide a welcoming space for children and teens to explore their interests, build confidence, and form lasting relationships with positive role models. With programs centered on academic success, healthy lifestyles, and leadership development, the Boys & Girls Clubs of South County aims to uplift every young person who walks through its doors once the facility officially opens in 2026.
