Lady Titans win girls field hockey championship

by Phillip Brents

Rain or shine, the San Diego Section held its girls field hockey championships on Saturday, Nov. 15, at La Jolla High School. Also taking place that day are section finals in cross county (Balboa Park’s Morley Field) and boys water polo (Coggan Family Aquatic Complex).

Inclement weather was forecast throughout the day from an approaching Pacific storm. Wet weather might have provided a hinderance, but it was difficult to dampen championship game spirits.

The second-seeded Eastlake Lady Titans were making their first CIF finals appearance since winning the Division II title in 2018 under coach Robert Blas, 2-1 over Mt. Carmel.

This year’s opponent was the top-seeded Del Norte Lady Nighhawks, who had shut out their ;opening two playoff opponents — 2-0 over eighth-seeded Bonita Vista (10-11) and 1-0 in overtime over fifth-seeded Mira Mesa (15-7).

Saturday’s championship game remained scoreless through 60 minutes of regulation play, and there as still no score through 20 minutes of overtime, which necessitated a shootout to determine a winner.

Eastlake (18-1-2) won the tiebreaker 5-4 over Del Norte (15-5).

Lady Titan junior goaltender Emma Brown registered five saves in the shutout victory.

Brown appeared in 20 games with three goals allowed, 30 saves (0.909 save percentage), 10 wins, two ties and eight shutouts.

Eastlake’s field hockey championship built on the school’s Division II girls team tennis championship on Nov. 1. That game also went to a tiebreaker with the second-seeded Lady Titans out-scoring fifth-seeded San Marcos 73-68 after the teams were knotted up 9-9 on the scoreboard.

EHS athletic director D.J, Mancillas said the two teams were comparable to ne another.

“They’re two teams that were solid overall with a few standouts on them,” Mancillas said. “They had a great season and winning attitude.”

“We did end up winning it all this season!” EHS coach Birdie Burgon said. “It was an amazing ride.”

Saturday’s championship tripleheader also included the Division I and Open Division finals.

Second-seeded Bishop’s (23-2) defeated fourth-seeded Canyon Hills (19-6) by a score of 3-0 while top-seeded Mt. Carmel (16-8-1) defeated sixth-seeded La Costa Canyon (10-15-2) in an overtime shootout for the Division I title.

LCC eliminated third-seeded San Dieguito Academy (12-7) in the quarterfinals while eighth-seeded Canyon Crest (12-10-1) dispatched top-seeded Torrey Pines (20-4) by a 2-1 score in a shootout in the Open Division quarterfinals.

Sophomore Lola Conway led the Lady Knights with two goals in the Open final.

Both Mt. Carmel and LCC battled to a 2-2 overtime draw before the Lady Sundevils emerged with a 3-2 shootout win
