Lady Titans score Division II girls team tennis title
This year’s San Diego Section girls tennis playoffs wrapped up Oct. 31-Nov. 1 in four divisions: Open, Division I, Division II and Division III.
Metro-Mesa League champion Eastlake, seeded second in the 16-team draw, won the Division II championship with a tiebreaker win over fifth-seeded San Marcos.
The teams were tied 9-9 with the toe-breaker favoring the Lady Titans 73-68 in games won.
Senior Andrea Del Castillo led the charge for the Lady Titans with victories in all her singles matches.
Eastlake started the four-round tournament with a 15-3 win over No. 15 Grossmont on Oct. 28 and followed that with a 10-8 win over seventh-seeded Olympian n the quarterfinals the next day.
Eastlake advanced to Saturday’s championship game with a 13-5 victory against third-seeded Canyon Hills.
San Marcos jump-started its run with a 13-5 win over No. 12 Bonita Vista and followed with a 15-3 win over No. 13 Mater Dei Catholic in the quarterfinals. The Lady Knights eliminated No. 9 Poway, 13-5, in the semifinals.
Top-seeded Canyon Crest Academy defeated second-seeded Del Norte, 11-7, to capture the Open Division championship while top-seeded La Jolla Country Day edged second-seeded La Jolla, 9-9, in a tiebreaker (74-64 in games).
Fifth-seeded Mira Mesa defeated third-seeded Christian, 11-7, to win the Division III banner.
The Division III field included San Ysidro and Hilltop in a pair of play-in games.
Girls field hockey
Four Metro Conference team gained entry into the Division II San Diego Section playoffs: No. 2 Eastlake, No. 3 Olympian, No. 8 Bonita Vista and No. 10 Otay Ranch. Eastlake and Olympian recieved byes to this week’s quarterfinals.
Finals are Saturday, Nov. 15, at 1 p.m. at La Jolla High School.
