Kids and cars focus of Saturday festival

by Debbie Sklar

Families across the South Bay are gearing up for the 23rd Annual Day of the Child Festival & Car Show, set for Saturday, April 11, at Memorial Park in Chula Vista. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the park will transform into a lively hub of activities, music, and community resources for children and their families.

“The Day of the Child Festival is about celebrating children while connecting families to the resources they need to stay healthy, supported, and successful,” said Jovita Arellano, president of the United Lowrider Coalition. “Many families don’t always know where to find services like health screenings, educational programs, youth activities, and community support.”

The festival will bring together more than 100 community organizations, offering families access to a variety of resources in one place. Attendees can explore booths with health information, educational programs, youth activities, and giveaways, all while enjoying live music and performances throughout the day.

One of the event’s highlights is the Day of the Child Car Show, featuring over 130 classic and custom vehicles along Third Avenue. Visitors will have the chance to admire the cars up close, sample food from local vendors, and participate in interactive activities designed for kids of all ages.

While the festival is geared toward families with children, it welcomes everyone. Parents, grandparents, youth, community leaders, and car enthusiasts are all invited to enjoy the festivities.

“Our goal is simple—bring families together for a day of joy while connecting them to services that strengthen our community,” Arellano said. “It’s a chance for families to explore programs, have fun, and leave feeling supported.”

The Day of the Child Festival has become a beloved South Bay tradition, blending entertainment, culture, and community resources. With something for everyone—from live performances and hands-on activities to the colorful car show—the festival promises a day of celebration, learning, and connection.

Families planning to attend are encouraged to arrive early to make the most of the activities and enjoy all the event has to offer.
