Incubus relives thrill of 2001 platinum album “Morning View” in Chula Vista
Review by Andy Bartotto
Incubus came ready to take the crowd back to 2001 to perform its “Morning View” album in its entirety July 19 on its Morning View + The Hits tour 2025 at the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista.
It’s a limited tour, having started in Nashville on June 25 and ends at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood on Oct. 4 without any dates between now and then.
The night started with Paris Jackson, yes, daughter of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, taking the stage solo with only an acoustic guitar. As her set started, fans realized that any thoughts they had of her having grown up as a member of the Jackson family faded away. She not only sings and plays guitar, but she’s also a model and an actress. Luckily, plenty of patrons were in their seats by the time she took the stage.
Manchester Orchestra, from Atlanta, then took the stage, led by singer/guitarist Andy Hull, who has an amazing voice and it’s only getting better with time. They started off with “Pride,” “Keel Timing,” “Bed Head,” and ended their nine-song set with “The Silence.” The only disappointment with their set was how short it was.
Incubus then took the stage for the group’s two-hour set to perform the “Morning View” album in its entirety, and in album order. The band, which was formed when members were attending Calabasas High School in 1991, performed magnificently, and Brandon Boyd’s vocals sounded better than ever. The group’s set started with the hard-hitting songs “Nice to Know You,” “Circles” and then “Wish You Were Here.”
The album debuted on Billboard’s Top 200 at No. 2 and by December 2001 was certified platinum. “Wish You Were Here” ranked No. 4 on the Alternative charts and “Drive” won Billboard’s Alternative Single of the Year award.
A nice surprise were acoustic versions of “Blood on the Ground” and “Mexico,” in which Boyd, Mike Einziger (guitarist) and newest member Nicole Row, who joined in 2023, sat near the front the stage and performed. A few other special moments took place when “Are You In?” started with them playing Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” and drummer Jose Pasillas playing as if he was Colllins. Another fun moment came when Boyd sang Rihanna’s “Umbrella” to begin the band’s song “Under My Umbrella.”
