Flag football kickoff sees Lady Cougars, Lady Barons spike foes

The 2025 girls flag football season has kicked off already with some noteworthy results.

In rematch of last year’s San Diego Section Division IV championship game, the San Ysidro Lady Cougars turned the tables on the Olympian Lady Eagles with an 18-6 non-league victory on Aug. 12.

San Ysidro’s Vida Sanchez recorded 101 passing yards, one touchdown, 50 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Giana Salce had 52 receiving yards, one touchdown on offense. On defense, San Ysidro’s Mia Gonzalez had five tackles, Kristine Fadriquela had one interception (20 yards), Valentina Melendrez had one interception (31 yards) and Rhiane Fadriquela had one interception (10 yards)

LADY BARONS ON TOP: Bonita Vista defeated host Hilltop, 48-6, on Aug. 14 to officially kick off regular season play for both teams. Junior Mia Ramirez passed for 125 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 105 yards and two more scores to ignite the BV offense. Dariyan Wilson, Layla Schoen and Gabrielle Meza each caught one touchdown pass while senior Ella Gomez recorded three sacks. Hilltop punted four times. Leiani Wilson averaged 20.7 yards on three returns.

Bonita Vista improved to 2-0 in regular season play with an 18-2 non-league win over visiting Downey on Saturday, Aug. 16. Ramirez completed three touchdown passes for 179 yards. Dariyan Wilson, Schoen and Sofia Garay each caught one spiral for a touchdown.

The lady Baron defense recorded five sacks, including three by Gomez. Wilson and Schoen each recorded one interception to buttress the all-around defensive effort.
