Eastlake Titans, Otay Ranch Mustangs skate into holiday break with 5-0 records

by Phillip Brents

The Metro Conference wrapped up two weeks of roller hockey play prior to the holiday break with a bunch of goals Thursday night, Dec. 18,  at the Castle Park High School rink: 29 of them to be exact. Otay Ranch defeated Sweetwater 10-1 to face off the three-game set, followed by a 12-0 win by Eastlake over Southwest and a 6-0 win by Hilltop over San Ysidro.

The Eastlake Titans and Otay Ranch Mustangs skated into the break with 5-0 records, all in non-league play. The Hilltop Lancers were 4-1 followed by the Southwest Raiders and Bonita Vista Barons with 3-2 records, the Mar Vista Mariners at 2-2, San Ysidro Cougars at 0-4, Castle Park Trojans at 0-5 (all forfeits) and Sweetwater Red Devils at 0-6.

Senior Chris Rollbusch continues to top Eastlake in scoring with 28 points (22 goals, six assists) in five games. Right on his heels in freshman Jacob Fox with 25 points (18 goals, seven assists).

The Titans have scored 64 goals in five games, an average of 12.8 goals per game.

Rollbusch collected eight points (seven goals, one assist) in the win over Southwest while Fox generated six points (three goals, three assists). Junior Sid Jonason had five assists — all to set up goals by Rollbusch as a deadly duo.

Sophomore Desi Garcia contributed a goal and assist. Jonason and Garcia both have 11 points on the season.

Southwest goaltender Marco Roque had Eastlake pretty much shut down through the opening two periods (2-0 in the first period and 4-0 in the second period) before the Titans started to rain down goals (eight) in the third period.

Otay Ranch’s own freshman phenom, Gavin Corriveau, continues to rack up goals as well. He had seven goals and two assists in the win over Sweetwater. Santiago Pearson scored twice in the game against the Red Devils while David Hedgecock tallied once.

Corriveau scored eight goals in a Dec. 15 game against Mar Vista.

New Mustang head coach Caroline Alfonso has been greeted by a very promising start.

“We have a very strong core group that has been helping the beginners along,” she said.

Hilltop went three-for-three during the week, starting with a 12-1 over Sweetwater on Dec. 15.

The three stars of the Dec. 18 game included Brenden Beaver with two goals and two assists, Will Acevez with two goals and Josh Carone with two goals.

The Cougars held the Lancers scoreless in the second period but couldn’t make up their initial 3-0 deficit. Hilltop ended the game with three goals in the third period.

Non-league play resumes Jan. 5. League play in three divisions faces off Jan. 7-8.
