Earth Day celebration to have Chula Vista bayfront view
There’s something about Earth Day that brings out the best in people—and in Chula Vista, that spirit will be on full display later this month. Did you know the very first Earth Day was celebrated back in 1970 with 20 million Americans taking part? It’s a tradition that has grown into a global celebration of the planet, and Chula Vista is joining in.
To highlight its commitment to environmental protection, the City of Chula Vista will host its annual South Bay Earth Day on Saturday, April 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Chula Vista Bayfront Park. The free, family-friendly event invites the community to celebrate sustainability, connect with local organizations, and learn practical ways to care for the environment.
South Bay Earth Day encourages simple, everyday actions that can help reduce environmental impact—because small actions really do add up. Attendees can explore interactive exhibits on green energy, water conservation, and food waste composting. About 50 vendors will be on hand, giving guests the chance to meet local organizations and eco-friendly businesses advancing sustainability in the region. The event is powered entirely by battery energy, supported in part by San Diego Community Power.
“South Bay Earth Day is more than a celebration—it’s an opportunity for our community to come together and take meaningful action for a more sustainable future,” said Manuel Medrano, environmental services manager for the city of Chula Vista. “By providing hands-on activities and practical resources, we’re empowering residents to make environmentally friendly choices that benefit our neighborhoods today and for generations to come.”
One of the most popular features of the event is the Fix-It Clinic. Residents can bring broken household items to skilled volunteers who help diagnose and repair them—everything from small electronics to clothing in need of minor sewing repairs. By fixing items instead of tossing them, participants help keep usable goods out of landfills.
Another fun, hands-on activity is a tie-dying workshop. Guests are encouraged to bring an old white T-shirt and give it a colorful new life, showing just how easy and creative reusing items can be.
Visitors can also stop by the Recharge Zone, powered by San Diego Community Power, where they can relax, recharge their phones, enjoy coffee from a local barista, and learn about clean energy.
Guests are encouraged to arrive in true Earth Day style by biking to the event and using the complimentary bike valet. With live and interactive entertainment, a variety of food options, and activities for all ages, South Bay Earth Day promises something for everyone.
Earth Day is celebrated in more than 190 countries worldwide, so attending this local event connects participants to a global movement focused on protecting our planet.
