E-vehicle chargers coming
Chula Vista is preparing to open a new Tesla Supercharger station that will significantly expand electric vehicle charging options in the community.
The site, located at The Shops at San Miguel Ranch, 2310 Proctor Valley Road, will feature 16 Tesla Superchargers and is expected to open in the coming weeks, pending SDG&E’s power-on date.
The project was highlighted during a January event where Mayor John McCann met with media representatives to discuss the station’s readiness, community response, and future expansion plans.
“The feedback from the community and local business owners has been very positive,” McCann said. “Many noted that the new superchargers are expected to increase traffic flow to the shopping center, which will directly benefit all businesses within the area at all hours of the day. Additionally, the location of the new Supercharger was highlighted for its convenience, given its proximity to retail, dining, and other business options within the shopping center.”
According to McCann, construction of the station is complete, and the site is ready to open once SDG&E completes its power supply connection.
“The project is completed, and the station is ready to be opened following SDG&E’s power-on supply date scheduled within the next few weeks,” he said.
Plans are also underway for additional universal charging options at the site. McCann said 10 to 15 non-Tesla universal chargers are currently in the early planning stages.
“The additional 10 to 15 universal (non-Tesla) chargers are currently in the early stages of planning, and the property owners are in contact with multiple potential companies and vendors seeking bids, and then will move on to negotiations,” McCann said. “The proposed chargers will be placed directly adjacent to the current Tesla Superchargers on the south side of the parking lot.”
City officials emphasized that the Supercharger station aligns with Chula Vista’s long-term sustainability and transportation goals.
“The planned Tesla Supercharging Station at The Shops at San Miguel Ranch supports Chula Vista’s broader EV and sustainability goals by expanding convenient public charging infrastructure,” McCann said. “It aligns with the city’s Climate Action Plan and ongoing municipal fleet electrification efforts, while complementing other public charging networks in the area.”
Once operational, the station is expected to deliver both economic and environmental benefits.
“It will increase traffic flow and customer visits to nearby businesses, boosting local economic activity as EV drivers stop to shop or dine while charging,” McCann said.
