Drive to ‘Stamp out’ hunger

by Xiomara Gerardo

The National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its 33rd annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 10, collecting non-perishable food donations to support local food pantries.

Residents are encouraged to participate by placing non-perishable food items in a bag near their mailbox before mail delivery on May 10. Donations will be picked up by carriers and delivered to local food banks and pantries.

The event mobilizes letter carriers in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands to collect food donations left by mailboxes. Since its launch, the initiative has gathered more than 1.9 billion pounds of food.

The drive comes, organizers say, as food banks often face shortages in spring and summer months when holiday donations taper off and school meal programs are unavailable for many children.

According to Feeding America, over 44 million Americans face food insecurity, including 14,000,000 children and 5.5 million seniors over the age of 60.

Customers are encouraged to verify food collections with their letter carrier or by entering delivery ZIP Code at www.nalc.org/community-service/food-drive/branch-lookup for local NALC Branch coverage in their area.

If the search tool does not return any results, contact the local Post Office or email communityserviceshq@nalc.org.
